Matsuba Carp & water-lily flowers ceramic sgraffito form
This ceramic form has been thrown on the wheel using a very white stoneware clay and while it’s still damp coloured clay slips have been applied to the surface.
I have then taken a sharp tool and drawn the outline of the carp and water-lily flowers and carved back the clay surface creating a lovely 3D effect.
The decoration on the fish and flowers has been drawn on using a technique called sgraffito with extra colours being added to highlight the flowers and carp bodies. Only the fish have been glazed giving each one a lovely shimmer. I am fascinated by carp and have many different pieces planned using their amazing markings and scales as inspiration.
This form has been decorated across the base so the design is allowed to continue around and over the surface.
The neck of the piece has been closed so I have incised through the design creating small openings around the neck and on the base. Each piece I create is unique and takes many hours to complete by hand.
This piece measures 28cm high / 14cm wide / foot 5.5cm
