Malaysian butterfly & Hibiscus sgraffito vessel
Inspiration for this piece was taken from the large Malaysian butterfly the Iswara which I have placed with the native Hibiscus plant in flower. I’m excited to see how the yellow plays off the lilacs and blues and I feel it adds another dimension to my work.
This piece is part of a new collection exploring colour backgrounds to my sgraffito. The background has been created using my pale-yellow slip and has been applied by hand adding an extra process to my decoration.
Every unique design created starts life as a detailed line drawing. Each piece has been thrown on the wheel, left to slightly dry and then goes through many different processes to create my intricate images onto the damp clay surface.
My decoration is a combination of painting with clay slips, carving and using sgraffito to draw the delicate lines onto each design. This takes many hours of work and no two pieces will ever look the same.
Once completed these are left to dry for a few weeks and fired twice in an electric kiln during which I have selectively glazed the main themes leaving the rest of the decoration matt.
The decoration continues across the base which is a very unusual and distinctive feature of my ceramic art.
